Plating Definitions

Electroplating is a method of depositing zinc on the surface of the part using an electrolytic attraction of the zinc to the fastener. Electroplating deposits a dense coating of zinc over the entire surface of the part. The zinc plating is a sacrificial coating protecting the base part from scratches or other coating breaks.

Mechanical plating is a method of depositing zinc on the surface of the part using a hammering or impact process. This method applies the zinc to the entire surface of the part. Mechanical plating deposits a less dense, but thicker coating of zinc over the surface of the part. The zinc plating is a sacrificial coating protecting the base part from scratches or other coating breaks.

Sentri™ Corrosion Resistance Coating

Silver Sentri™ and Color Sentri™ are proprietary heatcured plastic alloy coatings that SFS intec applies to the entire surface of the plated steel fastener. Chemically, Sentri is a metallic filled organic polymer coating applied to fasteners by means of a dip/spin/cure process. Both Silver and Color Sentri are applied in multiple coats to a prescribed finished film thickness. Each coat is oven cured after application for maximum adhesion and corrosion protection. Color Sentri is available in a variety of colors to match selected panel colors. Fasteners with sealing washers are assembled prior to coating so that all of the final assembly surfaces are coated with the corrosion-resistant film.

What is Important in Fastener Finish Systems?

Adhesion of the coating to the fastener
Each material substrate from the steel fastener surface to the topcoat relies on the integrity of the bonding interaction of the layers to provide the adhesion and abrasion resistance of the overall coating system.

SFS Chromagard™ Acrylic Polyurethane Color Coating
SFS Chromagard™ Acrylic Polyurethane Color Coating
SFS has been involved in the application of fastener coatings in North America for nearly half of a century. In recent years we have partnered with worldwide coating and finish system manufacturers in the development and application of systems to meet our customers' needs.

Chromagard is the metal building industry's preferred fastener topcoat due to its strength, adhesion, and color-fast characteristics.
  • Chromagard is a high-performance color-coating system based on polyurethane coating systems technology. The two-component acrylic polyurethane coating is spray applied to Silver Sentri coated fastener head and washer.
  • Color match is guaranteed for every color and every fastener.
  • Chromagard is available on all Impax, Woodgrip, and other Weather Gard fasteners.
  • Chromagard technology is based on construction and automotive finish systems.
  • Chromagard has superior resistance to installation abrasion for in-place appearance and performance.
Color shift resistance of the top coat
"Color shift" is the changing of color, over time, as compared to the original new color appearance. Color shift, combined with reduced gloss, brings about the "faded" appearance we see on old painted surfaces. SFS intec has conducted accelerated exposure testing to confirm the performance of Chromagard™.

Chromagard provides resistance to sunlight exposure for superior product appearance for the life of the building.

Corrosion resistance of the fastener
Chromagard is the topcoat of an integrated plating and corrosion resistant coating system. The interrelationship of the layers of plating, Silver Sentri™, and the Chromagard topcoat provides the complete corrosion resistance performance of the finish.
